In a story where land is the main character, the audience is brought along an emotional journey in which Cañar, after selflessly feeding and caring for humans, feels forgotten as the balance in the human world shifts towards greed and power. The creatures, spirits, birds, and first seeds however continue to bond the Cañari to Cañar, giving them strength to fight through great danger. Today, when Cañar faces its gravest injury yet, will Mama ZhinZhona, Cañari Ancestors, Kuyvivi and Guacamaya, be able to retain the bond between human and earth? It will take the voices of the bravest humans to lead through the heart, fight to remember roots, and alert their brothers and sisters to gather in masses and work alongside mountain spirits, birds and seeds to protect Cañar.
CHILDREN'S BOOK COMING SOON
Kuri Muru which means “Grain of gold” in Kichwa, promotes the Cañari indigenous food culture in children and adolescents in Ecuador’s school systems, communities and food organizations. Founder Lucinda Duy, a brilliant and strong Cañari woman, her hard-working and supportive husband José Pichazaca, and their two children welcomed Revolutionary Grains into their home while we were still in the dream stage of our organization. We were there to witness Inti Raymi (the summer solstice), and Muyu Fest (a grain festival hosted by another indigenous grain organization, Mushuk Yuyay). Amidst a nation-wide protest led by indigenous, fighting to be seen and supported by the government, Simren told them about her solidarity lattice vision: what if we connected movements like these together, with a shared-narrative? From this seed, Lucinda and Jose, fervently supported Simren, and with this support we want to honor Kuri Muru as our first stakeholder partner in the solidarity lattice.

Cañar: One Place Where Bright Amaranth and Quinoa Root

“Our community is faced with the food crisis, poor nutrition and the invasion of low-quality industrialized products in schools. Witnessing this motivates us to create healthy eating alternatives through the consumption of amaranth and quinoa. These grains, traditional to the Cañari region, are known for their nutritional and medicinal content. Bringing them back to the center of eating habits will promote the well-being of children and adolescents of the Kichwa Cañari and Cañarense people”.
